why I created Collection Five
For the last year, I took a break from creating.
The circumstances in my life were heavy on me, my inspiration halted, and I lived day to day with anxiety about my next and every move. After having an amazing year as a portrait photographer, building my portfolio with dozens of projects, meeting amazing people for shoots every week, creating videos, publishing my poetry and thinking of this project… everything suddenly halted.
In the last year, I decided to quit pursuing a degree in science to focus more on the who, the what, the where, and the how of the world. How people could help the environment and vice versa. How bad our situation is and what creative solutions people like me can think of to lessen the burden we put on the Earth. What people are going through in different parts of the world and why. How cities work, flow, and thrive. All of this sparked something in me that had been buried after my life had gone to pieces the year before.
It took me quite some time to get my feet back on the ground so that I could start dreaming up what I would make next. It felt so amazing to be back and fully immersed in the world of artists and creatives, so amazing that I decided I didn’t want to miss out on any more. So this project, something I’ve been putting together in my mind for the last two years now, serves as an encapsulation of what I love. Sustainability, the earth, mindfulness, self-care, creatives and their stories, photography, interior design, books, art, thrifting, and research are all factors in my life that I couldn’t relate until now. I realized that I didn’t just love to observe the atmosphere that a room of artists can create, I wanted to make one myself. I wanted the chance to build a community and eventually give local artists like myself a place to meet and exist together.
I hope that this project inspires the people that I interact with that there’s much more to our purpose here on earth. I know that many of us are scared about the future, but that fear can’t stop us from trying to make it better, trying to fight for equal rights, trying to heal our planet, or from trying to move forward ourselves. Instead, we can look on the bright side and the bright people we have in our communities. We can read amazing poetry, become inspired by people who spread positivity for a living, look at incredible creations, expand our minds with ground-breaking information, and become better people in general.
So here’s the the future, a more sustainable and beautiful one, and to creating ourselves one day at a time.
